  • Q: What are the civil services? How to get into civil services of India?

    Ans: Civil Services are considered to be the most prestigious jobs in the country meant for the recruitment of administrative level staff for Central Government vacancies such as IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS etc.

    It is conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) through Pan India common selection tests in 3 different phases (Preliminary, Mains & Interview) where aspirants need to qualify each level to get to the next one.

  • Q: What is the age limit and number of attempts permitted to write UPSC Civil Services Exam?

  • Q: Can I clear IAS exam without attending classroom coaching?

    Ans: Cracking the IAS exam without classroom coaching support is possible through organized & focused self-study approach. However, attending coaching classes certainly has advantages since aspirants get a chance to be groomed and mentored by qualified teachers who have the right expertise to guide students systematically. There are good institutes and teachers who help aspirants save a lot of time and effort. Aspirants also get to track their preparation levels as they attend classes in groups comprising other students in addition to getting the appropriate competitive environment. But not all coaching institutes provide quality service, so if you wish to join one, do that after proper research.

  • Q: Can I get previous year UPSC question papers online?

    Ans: Yes, it is available on the website of UPSC - www.upsc.gov.in

  • Q: Is computer learning mandatory?

    Ans: Yes. For most of the posts basic knowledge in computer application is required.

  • Q: What is the structure of UPSC Civil Service Prelims Exam? (2015 Pattern)

    Ans: Prelims exam is objective in nature consisting of2 papers of 200 marks each. Paper 1 is related to General Studies while Paper 2 is meant to test the Mental Ability & Aptitude of the candidate. For selection to the Mains exam, only the points scored in Paper 1 get counted provided the candidate has achieved 33 percent marks in Paper 2.

  • Q: Will there be individual cut-off for two papers in Civil Service Prelims?

    Ans: The minimum cut off marks for Paper 2 is 33 percent. Commission may fix a minimum cut-off mark for Paper 1 as well.

  • Q: Will there be negative marks or separate marks for Preliminary Questions?

    Ans: There will be negative marking for incorrect answers for all the questions except a few where negative marking will be inbuilt in the form of different marks being awarded to the most appropriate and not so appropriate answer to such questions.

  • Q: What is the structure for UPSC Civil Service Mains Exam? (Latest Pattern)

    Ans: The Mains examination consists of written test followed by a personal interview. The written examination will consist of 9 papers of the conventional essay type. Two papers (out of 9) will be qualifying in nature. Marks obtained in all the compulsory papers (Paper–I to Paper-VII) and Marks obtained in Interview for Personality Test will be taken into account for determining the rank.

  • Q: Which optional subject should I choose for UPSC Mains?

    Ans: UPSC has given a list of around 50 optional subjects to choose from. The selection from aspirant’s end should be based on his/her interest and proficiency in the subject.

  • Q: Which stream/subject should I choose during graduation which may help me to clear UPSC exam?

    Ans: Most of the questions in the General Studies paper in Prelims as well as Mains are related to Arts &Humanities. But it is neither necessary nor advisable to opt for a particular stream for graduation just with a focus to crack the UPSC exam. Graduation subjects should be based upon one’s taste which could be humanities, science, engineering, literature or even management, since one is free to choose any optional subject for UPSC Mains and it may not necessarily be the one from the subjects selected during graduation.

  • Q: Will there be minimum qualifying marks for UPSC Mains Compulsory Papers?

    Ans: The Commission has the discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination. For 2015, the minimum score is 25% for Indian languages and English language. For GS1, GS2, GS3 and GS4 the minimum marks expected is 10%.

  • Q: Will UPSC deduct marks for bad handwriting?

    Ans: If a candidate’s handwriting is not easily legible, a deduction can be made on this account out of the total marks otherwise accrued to him.

  • Q: Will there be minimum qualifying marks for UPSC Interview?

    Ans: The interview will carry 275 marks (with no minimum qualifying marks).
